The Best Places on your Body for Tattoos

Deciding just where the best place on your body to have a tattoo can be a rather difficult challenge for some people. This is especially true of those who have never had a tattoo done before. There are those who like the idea of a simple flower tattoo to enjoy, and there are also some who prefer something more extravagant. These are the people who tend to decide, over time, that they need to have as many tattoos as possible.

If you choose to get only one unique flower tattoo, and you do not belong to the group of people who beg for attention, your upper shoulder blade may be just the place to get your flower tattoo. This is a prime location in case you happen to have a job or other situation where you will need to cover up your tattoo. Tattoos located in this area are easily hidden when necessary.

Following in this same vein, the upper arms or upper thigh is also a wise place to have a tattoo. You can wear shirts with sleeves, and of course, not many people go out without wearing some sort of pants or shorts. Your ankle is another good place if you want to be able to show it off and hide at different points in time. Socks, high top shoes, or even boots will cover it nicely when you need to do that, while letting you display it during warmer months of the year by wearing sandals.

Pain is an area of concern for many people. If you fall into this group, you may be more concerned about the least painful place on your body to get a tattoo. To avoid pain as much as possible, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. In most cases, the least painful area to get a tattoo is the farthest from the heart. However, you should also know that anything tattooed over bones or tendons will have a fair amount of pain involved. If hiding your tattoo is not much of a concern for you, then the forearms is a good place to get a tattoo while avoiding the pain during the process. As this is a rather fleshy area, there is no need to require going over too much bone except close to the wrist and around the outer edge of the arm.

Something to be aware of is if you are getting a tattoo on your arm, you should refrain from getting one on the inside crease of your elbow. The reason for this is that the nerve endings here are quite close to the upper layer of skin and can cause quite a significant amount of pain. You will also probably not want to go around your elbow as it is rather close to the bone. The upper arms and shoulders seem to work well for most people, however, the INSIDE of the upper arm is another story altogether. Even some of the most tattooed people around have some unpleasant stories about how it feels to have the inside of the upper arms done.

A couple of the more comfortable spots for a tattoo are the shoulder blades and the small of the back. As there is not much in the way of bone or nerve endings involved, the pain should be minimal. While the small of the back is a recommended area, you may want to stay away from being tattooed down the spine. There are plenty of bone and nerves there, and you WILL notice. In addition, getting a tattoo over the kidneys seems to be one area that only a sadist would enjoy having ink done.

Many people, for various reasons, get tattoos on their buttocks. With virtually no bone and very few nerve endings, this is a pretty decent place for a tattoo. The biggest problem with getting a tattoo here is that you may not be able to show it off to others quite as much as other areas. In keeping with this general area, the hips and upper thighs are fairly tolerable places to get tattooed, although you might notice it’s more of a ticklish than painful spot. The lower abdomen and stomach is a very good place for females to get tattoos, but men have less of a pain threshold in those areas.

Many people choose to decorate their chests with body art, including some intriguing flower tattoos. This isn’t a bad place as long as you stay away from the sternum and lower ribs. The pectoral muscles seem to absorb the pain rather well in men while the breasts do a good job of cushioning the pain in women since there are not many nerves located there.

The lower calves of the legs work out pretty well for nearly everyone, as do ankles. However, stay away from the front of the lower legs, or the shins, along with the ankle bone itself. Having a needle rapidly piercing through the skin right over a bone is an experience no one will forget anytime soon. This is painful to nearly everyone. Tattooing the tops of your feet deserves special mention here. While these tattoos look really cool and interesting, it is exceptionally painful to many people to receive a tattoo there. The reason for the discomfort is that the needle is literally travelling across, not only the bone, but tendons and nerve endings as well. Think long and hard before getting a tattoo there.

One area on the body that novices may feel would be too painful for a tattoo is the back of the neck. In reality, this is a fairly good place for most people as there is really not a lot of pain involved. However, if you decide to move across and to the front of the neck, you will find that can become quite painful. While on the subject of the head area of the body, it’s usually not a great idea to get a tattoo on your face, although many tattoo aficionados will brave this. It is very painful, though, and really is not all that flattering. The exception to this is cosmetic tattooing, such as permanent eyeliner.

There is a way to prepare for the pain that may, or may not be, a part of your tattoo experience. Ask your tattoo artist to show you the needle settings that will be used for your tattoo. If it is sticking out rather far, that tells you that it might be necessary to prepare for a significant amount of pain no matter where you get your tattoo. A shallow needle that is not sticking out too far from the gun tube will let you know that chances are good you will only feel a slight buzz feeling and you will do just fine.

Preparation is definitely the key to having a pleasant experience when receiving your flower tattoo, especially if you are a first timer. Keep in mind what the end result is going to be, and just how proud you will be to show off your lovely new inked flower. That should get you through no matter how much or little pain is involved.
